Ludology (from the latin ludus, meaning game) is the academic study of games. Ludologists assert that games should be understood on their own terms rather than as narratives which can be studied using traditional forms of narrative analysis (the view of narratology).

Often, emphasis is placed on the processes of play and fun, created through mechanics as opposed to a game's fiction.
