Narratology is an approach which holds that games can be understood as narratives, and thus examined by existing forms of narrative study. It stands opposed to ludology, which holds that the unique nature of games requires a new framework and ought to be understood apart from narrative content.

Narratology tends to focus more on the elements of Story and Fiction in games, and less on the mechanics underlying a game's experience.
